Jamie Oliver & The Food Revolution

Something a little different today.

Today I was lucky enough to be in the audience at Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Live at the Sydney Opera House. One of my girlfriends had scored tickets so the 3 of us went to watch our food hero do his thing up on stage. Jamie’s message is simple. Good, fresh food for our children cooked at home a majority of the time and most importantly practical food education for children in our schools.  He is so incredibly passionate on the subject of healthy food for children, food education and awareness that it is very hard not to think about some of the things that we can improve on in our day to day lives to enhance our health & wellbeing.

As a working mum to a six year old I have been guilty of falling into the trap of takeaway as an easy meal & letting him have “junk food” more often than is ideal. Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking. I love baking. But sometimes, after a day at work, running around after school to extra curricular activities and just the general day to day grind, the last thing I want to do is to head to the grocery store and then go home & cook.

I have decided to make a change in our lives and rather than think of cooking as a chore, try thinking of it as more of a family activity, something we can do together. I can teach my child how to prep veggies, mix ingredients and when he is a little older how to cook them. I can get him involved in the process of preparing a meal to hopefully give him an interest in looking at the type of ingredients that are good & not so great. I want to give him the knowledge to be able to decide what food is good for him & also to grow up learning & knowing how to cook healthy food.

I had a fantastic time seeing Jamie Oliver in action – It’s not so often you get to see a celebrity chef cooking up a storm and even though we didn’t get to eat his cooking (boo) we did have a lovely lunch down at the Opera Kitchen of dumplings & prawn salad washed down with a few cocktails.

A perfect autumn day on the harbour!

Sorry about the crappy iPhone pics – I forgot my camera. Oops.
