Review | The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops

I’d heard about The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops quite a while ago, and they took a fair while to launch in Australia and by that time I’d kind of forgotten about them. But a shopping trip sorted that out and both the lightening and darkening drops came home with me.

Shall I start with the good or the bad? Let’s go with the good hey? The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops Lightening are fab. I’ve used them a few times to lighten up some foundations that were a little dark for me and these work brilliantly. Only a drop or two is needed and it will lift the shade just enough. You can add more if you really want to lighten but I don’t have any foundations that I need to dramatically change the shade of. I don’t find that it alters the foundation in any detrimental way as far as longevity or the way it sits on the skin. All in all, I really like these drops.

Ok, so with the good, comes the bad. The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in Darkening…. Oh boy. These do not work for me whatsoever. The tiniest drop into foundation changes the shade so dramatically and gives it an almost grey cast. I’ve tried them with a few different foundations but I just can’t make it work.

As you can see from the pictures, I have used the same foundation to demonstrate both the lightening and darkening drops, I have also used the exact same amount of the drops to each (line swatch original foundation, circle swatch mixed with drop of TBS drops). It’s pretty clear to see just how much difference there is between the two.

That being said, I can’t comment on how the darkening drops affect foundation once worn, because I’m not about to paint my face 456 shades darker than my own skin.

Another little thing to mention, neither dropper seems to really work properly. Maybe that’s just mine, but it doesn’t seem to effectively draw in the liquid, so I kind of just dot it on my hand with the dropper and blend. I use such a small amount of the lightening that it’s not really a bother.

So yes, one winner and one loser in this post. I’m pretty bummed that the darkening drops didn’t work out, as I have a couple of foundations that I’d really like to adjust one or two shades deeper. But I will get good use from the lightening. I know now that if I am between shades when purchasing a new foundation to just go the little darker and then use these drops!

Have you tried these? And especially let me know if you’ve made the darkening drops work. Perhaps I’m missing something?
